This summer, we enjoyed record footfall, with an astonishing number of people coming through our small house at Fiveways in Brighton. The atmosphere was amazing with such high quality art on display, and we enjoyed meeting interesting visitors immensely. At last, (almost) all the preparation is done, and we are ready to open, so please make a date in your diary. Our ten artists have gone beyond the usual to create what we feel is among our very best displays, full of colour, skill, and surprise.
We have now started planning for the May 2025 Open House, which will be the first four weekends in May plus Bank Holidays. In recent years, we have enjoyed a combination of fabulous art and incredible footfall, and we fully intend to continue with this! Here at 169, we’ve been working hard to bring you a new selection of artists, and some of the finest in their media at that. This is the last week we have of normal life before starting to turn the house almost literally upside down, as most of the furniture moves upstairs to make space! The lilac is now out in the garden bringing an intense perfume to accompany our outdoor offerings this year–the sculptures and ceramic birdbaths–and there’s a huge range of top quality art inside too for you to enjoy. With eleven artists in the house, set up is quite a complex logistical adventure, but it’s almost all done thanks to the cooperation and teamwork of our wonderful guest artists. … for a couple of thousand people to visit your house over just four weekends is a fair amount of work! The famous green door is currently enjoying a restoration, covered in filler and mastic prior to its new shade of green topcoat. In fact, the new green is quite possibly what it had originally–a modern recreation of the lovely and restful Scheele’s green, which was famously coloured with arsenic.
